A Note from January

I became a lawyer because I never wanted to be powerless for myself or for others.

About January

January is a public interest attorney, nonprofit executive, and experienced leader who has dedicated her career to creating greater safety for women, children, and families.

Most recently, January was the Executive Director of Arizona Legal Women and Youth Services (ALWAYS), a legal aid center she founded to provide life-changing and life-saving services to survivors of human trafficking, young adult survivors of domestic violence, children and youth who have been impacted by the foster care system, and runaway and homeless youth. ALWAYS exists to remove legal obstacles to safety, stability, and opportunity.

January has dedicated more than 20 years to leading non-profit and government agencies and initiatives. After serving as a prosecutor, January was a leader in Arizona’s Medicaid agency - AHCCCS, the Arizona Department of Health Services, and the Governor’s Office. January was an Advisor to Governor Napolitano, as well as an appointee to her Cabinet and Children’s Cabinet.

She was a designee to President Obama’s White House Council on Women and Girls, where she launched the Council to Combat Violence Against Women at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, resulting in new federal training and guidance to ensure that immigrant victims of crime are treated with the same dignity and protection that all victims deserve.
